With two simple tricks you can turn average Rice Krispie treats into perfect ones! It is easier than you think.

Why You’ll Love This Recipe!

Everyone knows how to make Rice Krispie Treats, right?  You just follow the directions on the back of the marshmallow package or the cereal box.  You can do that and you will get a pretty good treat.  But today I want to share with you how easy it is to make them perfect!  Who wants to be average when it is so easy to be perfect!

Ingredients Needed

  • Rice Krispie Cereal. You can also use other cereals such as corn flakes.
  • Butter. I use salted butter, if using unsalted butter, add in a pinch of salt.
  • Marshmallows. I prefer to use mini marshmallows but you can also use full size marshmallows. Use fresh marshmallows, not old marshmallows that are all stuck together!

Tips from Leigh Anne

  1. For me, the secret to a perfect Rice Krispie treats includes two things – more butter and more marshmallows. I use an entire bag of marshmallows and an entire cube (1/2 cup of butter).
  2. You can make marshmallow/butter mixture in the microwave in a bowl or in a saucepan on the stove top. Both work fine.

How to Make Rice Krispie Treats

  • Place marshmallows and butter into a microwave safe bowl or saucepan.

  • Melt in microwave on high for 1 1/2 – 2 minutes or melt on stovetop over low heat in a saucepan.
  • Stir until marshmallows and butter are melted and smooth. If butter is not totally melted, microwave for an additional 15 seconds.

  • Pour in cereal.
  • Stir until cereal is totally coated with marshmallow mixture.

  • Pour into a buttered 9 x 13 pan or spray pan with cooking spray and press cereal mixture down into pan. I don’t like to flatten mine too much.  I like to leave them a bit airy, but if you prefer compact treats go for it and really push those babies down into the pan.
  • Let them set up for 20 minutes or so before cutting into squares.

Flavor Variations:

  • Brown Butter (my personal favorite)
  • Cookies and Cream
  • Small Batch Rice Krispie Treats (4 Variations)
  • Malted Milk Ball
  • Cinnamon
  • Caramel
  • Chocolate Cherry

Frequently Asked Questions

Are these gluten free?

They are gluten free if you use gluten free rice krispie cereal and marshmallows.  I prefer Kraft Marshmallows because they are gluten free.

Can I freeze them?

Absolutely. I like to wrap them plastic wrap or foil and place in an airtight container. You can keep them in the freezer for up to 3 months. I prefer to freeze them in individual squares so I can easily grab one out when the craving hits! To defrost, just allow to sit at room temperature for about 15 minutes.

How long will rice krispie treats last?

They are best eaten within a couple of days, if it is going to be longer than that I recommend freezing them. To keep them fresh, store them in an airtight container at room temperature. I put a sheet of wax paper or parchment paper between the layers to keep them from sticking together.

I love this recipe for these bars – but every time I make them, for some reason they always fall apart. I even tried using a metal spoon to really mash them down into the pan this time and it didn’t help – they still crumble when you try to pick them up. Any idea what’s happening? I follow the recipe exactly! They taste great, but always crumble. Help!
