Hawaiian Pizza

Hawaiian Pizza is the perfect combination of flavors. The sweet pineapple, savory ham, melted mozzarella and tangy bbq sauce cover all of the bases.

Hawaiian Pizza

Why You’ll Love This Recipe!

Hawaiian Pizza is a fun way to use up your leftover Easter ham.  If it’s not Easter and you don’t have leftover ham, use my recipe for slow cooker ham and make one so you have leftovers!  You can also buy packaged diced ham in the meat section of the grocery store.

What is a Hawaiian Pizza?

Instead of a traditional red pizza sauce, this Hawaiian Pizza uses BBQ sauce as the base.  Just use your favorite, I’m a fan of the Sweet Baby Rays sauce.  The pizza is topped with leftover ham, red onions, fresh pineapple, some cilantro and of course mozzarella cheese.  It makes for a delicious combination.

Ingredients Needed

  • Ham. Use leftover ham or buy diced ham at the store. You can also substitute bacon.
  • BBQ Sauce. My favorite brand is Sweet Baby Rays.
  • Cheese. We use mozzarella or you can also use an Italian blend.
Pineapple. Canned pineapple tidbits is my favorite but you can also use chunks or use fresh pineapple.
  • Red Onion
  • Cilantro

How to Make Hawaiian Pizza

  • Make or buy pizza dough (see recipe below)
  • Place pizza stone into oven and preheat oven to 425 degrees F.
  • Cover pizza paddle or back side of cookie sheet with a light layer of cornmeal.
  • Divide dough in half (can refrigerate other half for later.)  Roll out dough to desired thickness on the back side of the cookie sheet or pizza paddle, may need to use more cornmeal to keep it from sticking.
  • Add a thin layer of BBQ sauce.
  • Top with 1 cup cheese, ham, pineapple and red onion.  Add remaining cheese.
  • Slide pizza off of paddle onto pizza stone.  If you don’t have a pizza stone just bake pizza on cookie sheet. If the dough is sticking to the cookie sheet when you are trying to move it to the pizza stone, gently lift it up and put more cornmeal underneath. The dough needs to be totally loose in order to slide onto the pizza stone.
  • Bake for about 15 minutes or until crust is golden brown and cheese is melted.  Remove from oven and sprinkle with chopped cilantro.

Frequently Asked Questions

What if I don’t have a pizza stone?

You can bake your pizza on a baking sheet or cookie sheet. The bottom of your crust will just not get quite as crisp.

How do you slice your pizza?

I’m always curious how people slice their pizza.  Do you slice your pizza in squares or in triangles?  I grew up eating pizza sliced in squares but since living on the west coast I have switched to triangles.  How about you?  It tastes great either way!

Can I use store bought pizza dough?

Absolutely, to save time you can buy it in the deli section of the store. I have included a recipe for making it at home too.

If you prefer a traditional red sauce on your Hawaiian Pizza, switch out the BBQ sauce for my homemade pizza sauce.
You can also use store bought pizza dough.
If you don’t have a pizza stone, bake the pizza on the cookie sheet you roll it out on.
