Why You’ll Love This Recipe!

I first served these ham and cheese sliders at a baby shower. It was a storybook themed shower and we needed something to represent the Green Eggs and Ham book. These sandwiches disappeared first and every one raved about them.

They are perfect to serve as an appetizer or as a main dish sandwich for an easy weeknight dinner idea. Ham and Cheese Sliders are also perfect for game day food.

They have great flavor thanks to the butter sauce you pour over the top. The melty cheese inside is my favorite part.

Ingredients Needed

  • Hawaiian Rolls (Kings is the brand I use) If you are unable to find them use some type of slider buns or light, fluffy dinner roll.
  • Black Forest Ham, honey ham or your favorite kind of deli ham.
  • Provolone Cheese, cut in slices
  • Cream Cheese, softened
  • Butter, salted and softened
  • Yellow Mustard or Dijon Mustard
  • Worcestershire Sauce
  • Minced Onions
  • Parmesan Cheese, grated
  • Poppy Seeds

How to Make Ham and Cheese Sliders

Tips

  1. Instead of Provolone cheese you could use Swiss Cheese, Mozzarella Cheese or Cheddar Cheese.
  2. If you prefer, you can substitute the ham with slices of turkey or roast beef.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I make hot ham and cheese sliders ahead of time?

Yes, ham and cheese sliders are a great make ahead meal. Make the sandwiches, but do not add the melted butter mixture, Parmesan cheese, or Poppy seeds. Store them covered in the refrigerator until ready to bake. Add melted butter mixture, cheese and seeds right before baking. These sandwiches are best served warm.

Do I have to use poppy seeds?

If you aren’t a poppy seed fan or can’t have them for various reasons you can totally leave them off. You could also substitute them for sesame seeds. They are more for appearance than flavor.

I’ve made these several times now and making them again this weekend, always a bit hit. I have found (and maybe it’s just me?) that when I put the
ham on the bottom and then the cheese slice with the bread lid directly on
top of the cheese, the tops tend to slip off to the side as the cheese melts
while baking. I’m going to try and put the cheese between the folded ham and see how that goes. I also tried it on NYE with the warmed raspberry preserves and everyone loved it, what a grreat addition!

I’m thinking these would be really good with a little crushed pineapple mixed into the cream cheese before spreading on the bread. Bring a little more “Hawaiian” into the recipe. I’ll let you know if I try it.

I also make these with Boar’s Head Virginia Ham thinly sliced and mascarpone cheese (soft, sweet and tasty) instead of regular cream cheese with the same type of topping. A side of heated/melted qood quality raspberry preserves/jam makes a surprisingly good dipping sauce (also served right away). I was inspired to make these after eating a similar sandwich at a historical tavern in Old Town Alexandria, Virginia. Yum!
