What is a Gyro?

Traditional gyros are a Greek Sandwich that is made with lamb or pork that is cooked on a rotisserie. It is served on pita bread and topped with tzatziki sauce. Since I don’t have a rotisserie or lamb, I figured out a delicious way to make it using beef my Instant Pot. The Instant Pot creates a tender and delicious beef.

Slow Cooker Beef Gyro

Beef Gyro Ingredients Needed

  • Flank steak. Sliced 1/4 inch thick
  • Seasoning. Salt, oregano, garlic powder

  • Greek yogurt. You can use any percentage of fat yogurt but I prefer the texture of a 2-5% variety.

Frequently Asked Questions

What can I use besides flank steak?

You can also use skirt steak, hanger steak, or flat iron steak.

Can I use chicken instead?

If you prefer a chicken gyro, I have a delicious recipe here.

How do you pronounce “gyro”

There are all kinds of different ways to say it but I always say it rhymes with “hero”.

Is gyro meat and shawarma the same thing?

The flavor of the two is similar but the shawarma meat is usually cut into chunks, put on skewers and grilled. It is served as a kabob with rice where the gyro is served as a sandwich.

My family all LOVED this recipe! I couldn’t find flank steak so I bought a little tri-tip roast that was already seasoned and marinating in the package. Since it was already seasoned, I left out the seasonings listed in the recipe. I followed everything else exactly. It was delicious! This will be a repeat at our house.

Hi! I will try this this week in my slow cooker. I never know what type of roast to buy. I see flank steak is an option but what cut of beef roast do you recommend? Thank you!

If you do it in the slow cooker, how long do you cook the beef? Looks yummy!

That information is included in the post. If you are making it in the slow cooker you will be cooking it on high for 3 1/2 – 4 hours or low for 6-7 hours.
