Seven Layer Dip is the perfect combination of all of your favorite Mexican flavors. It is popular at any party and one of the first appetizers to disappear.
Why You’ll Love This Recipe!
This recipe is always required for any big football watching occasion at our home. It is the first thing that my son will request when I ask what they want. Be it New Year’s Eve or Super Bowl Sunday there will be Seven Layer Dip at our house.
Why is it Called Seven Layer Dip?
Traditionally this dip has seven layers of ingredients and that is how it gets its name. Technically, the way I make it, it only has 6 layers of different ingredients but who is counting? If you are insistent on having seven layers scroll down to see what I did to make it officially a seven layer dip!
Ingredients Needed
- Sour Cream
- Mayonnaise
- Cheddar Cheese
- Tomato
- Green Onions
- Black Olives
- Guacamole
- Taco Seasoning
How to Make Seven Layer Dip
The first step is to find a pretty serving dish. I just used a shallow white baking dish. About 9″ inches in diameter
Layer One
- Layer Guacamole on the bottom of your dish in an even layer. You can make it from scratch but I use store-bought if I’m rushed for time. I like the fresh guacamole they sell in the Deli section. But if you want to make your own, check out my Chipotle Copycat Guacamole recipe.
Second Layer
- In a bowl, combine sour cream and taco seasoning mix. Mix to combine. Layer on top of the guacamole layer.
Third Layer
- Sliced Black Olives
Fourth Layer
- Chopped Green Onions
Fifth Layer
- Shredded cheese. I like to use Cheddar but Monterey Jack would be delish too.
Sixth Layer
- Diced Tomatoes
Seventh Layer
- Sour Cream. I think the Seven Layer Dip looks and tastes quite lovely just like this, with only six layers but if you are a detail person and need to have seven layers, give it a drizzle of sour cream over the top! Then you’ve got Seven Layer Dip!
- Serve with Tortilla chips.
Frequently Asked Questions
How long will 7 layer dip last?
Leftovers can be stored in the refrigerator for 3-4 days. The longer it is refrigerated the dip will begin to “bleed” or become watery. You can drain off the liquid and it will still taste great.
Why doesn’t your recipe have beans in it?
Traditionally seven layer dip does have a layer of beans but I am not a fan of beans so I don’t include it, feel free to add a layer of black beans or refried beans between the guacamole and sour cream layer.

I love making this layered dip, but I have always made mine with a base layer of Vegetarian Refried Beans, that I mix a drained can diced chilies into.

My family LOVES this dip, but we add a couple more layers. On the bottom we put a layer of our favorite bean dip and on top I sprinkle either a can of drained diced green chilies or if we like it hot – diced jalapenos. Try it, you’ll like it!
