Orange Scones

Orange scones are sweet, light and tender. The orange glaze is amazing. They are a delicious addition to any breakfast or brunch.

Orange Creamsicle Scones

Orange Scones Recipe

These Orange Scones have an extra little surprise hiding inside of them, white chocolate chips!  They add just the right amount of sweetness to the scones and give them a creamsicle like flavor.

These scones are everything a scone should be.  They are light and tender giving them amazing texture and they have lots of orange flavor thanks to the orange juice and rind, the white chocolate chips and the amazing orange glaze.

Scone Ingredients

  • Flour. Use all purpose flour
  • Baking Powder
  • Salt
  • Sugar
  • Butter. I use salted butter.
  • Eggs
  • Milk. 2 percent or whole milk
  • Heavy Cream
  • Oranges. For juice and zest. Always zest first and then juice.
  • White Chocolate Chips. Could also use semi sweet or dark chocolate if you prefer.

How to Make Orange Scones

  • Combine dry ingredients in a bowl.
  • Add in grated frozen butter. Use a pastry blender to combine into dry ingredients. Add in chocolate chips.
  • Combine wet ingredients in a bowl and then pour into dry ingredients.
  • Mix just until dry ingredients are incorporated. Do not overmix.
  • Divide dough in half and form each half into a round disc about one inch thick.
  • Cut each round into 8 pieces and place wedges, slightly apart, on a parchment paper lined baking sheet.
  • Bake at 425 degrees F. for 12-15 minutes or until lightly golden brown.
  • Allow to cool and then glaze.

Scone Glaze

  • Mix together powdered sugar
  • Add together powdered sugar, orange juice, melted butter and orange zest to get a nice drizzling consistency. If it’s too thick, add a bit more orange juice and if it’s too runny, add in more powdered sugar.

What to Serve With Scones

They would also be quite delicious served with some orange marmalade for more orange goodness or some lemon curd would also be an excellent choice.  Add a dollop of Devonshire cream if you want to bring out your inner anglophile. A nice cup of tea and you are ready to entertain the Queen.

Tips for Perfect Scones

  1. Use cold ingredients including butter, milk and eggs. Cold ingredients keep the butter from melting before the scones are baked. You want the butter to melt as the scone bakes so the scone will rise higher.
  2. Freeze your butter and then grate to make it easier to mix in.
  3. Use a pastry blender to combine dry ingredients and butter.
  4. You want to keep your ingredients cold until they go in the oven so if you aren’t baking right away, refrigerate the dough.
Can I freeze scones?

Scones freeze well. You can freeze the unbaked dough in an airtight container for several months. The scones do not need to be thawed before baking. They will just take a few more minutes to bake if they are frozen
You can also freeze baked scones or up to a month. To rewarm, wrap in foil and place in a 300 degree F oven for several minutes until heated through.

Can I add in other things?

These scones would also be delicious with the following added in:
dried apricots
dried cranberries
raisins
