Turn your favorite soda pop into soda ice cream with only 3 ingredients! It’s quick, easy and delicious!
It’s still a bit cold and rainy here in Portland, Oregon but we are looking forward to some warm sunny summer days. One of my favorite ways to celebrate summer is with homemade ice cream or a icy cold bottle of my favorite soda. So why not combine the two! Today’s Soda Ice Cream Recipe is the perfect combination of cold soda and ice cream. It may or may not get up to 95 degrees in Portland any time soon but we can still enjoy soda pop ice cream.
Soda Ice Cream Ingredients
This ice cream recipe is easy to make and only requires three ingredients.
- Soda. Use your favorite flavor. I love orange or red cream soda but any flavor will work.
- Sweetened Condensed Milk.
- Whole Milk. Whole milk will give you a creamier ice cream then 2 percent or something else.
Flavor Variations
- Root Beer. This one totally reminded me of the root beer whirls we use to get at The Spot Drive In in Kenosha, Wisconsin where the girls roller skated out to our car and hung the tray on the window!
- Orange. This created a yummy orange creamsicle flavor effect which is one of my favorite flavors of all times.
- Black Cherry. We loved this one too! This recipe works with any flavor of soda.
How to Make Ice Cream with Soda
- Pour four cups of your favorite COLD soda into a bowl. The ice cream will freeze much faster if the soda is cold. If you forget to chill the soda in the fridge, just put it in the freezer for 15-20 minutes.
- Add in a can of sweetened condensed milk.
- Add in one cup of whole milk. I definitely recommend using whole milk. This is an icy ice cream so the whole milk adds some creaminess.
- Pour the mixture into ice cream maker and process according to manufacturers directions.

Love the idea of cherry lime soda!

My family always used Nehi Peach soda to make ice cream. I think I’m going to have to go get an ice cream maker and try your versions. 😀
Oh, the recipe was 6 cans of cold soda and 1 can of sweetened condensed milk in the ice cream maker.

Love the idea of Peach Nehi! Yum!

This sounds fantastic but I was wondering is there a way to make it without an ice cream maker since I don’t see me getting one anytime soon. The whole living on a budget thing but this would be a good splurge family night treat.

I have never made it without an ice cream maker. You could try partially freezing it and then beating it with a mixer a bit and then freezing it again but actually have no idea how it would turn out – sorry!!

Debbie B – This is Soda Pop ice Cream is hugely popular in Hawaii. I don’t have an electric mixer or ice cream maker. When you’re doing by hand: 1. he trick is to slowly pour the soda into the milk because you need to keep the carbonated bubbles. 2. Then stir the mixture a few times. 3. Pour into freeze container for 1-1/2 – 2 hours. 4.take out of freezer. Mixture may have ice crystals. Don’t scrape it off. Take a spoon and mix enough times to incorporate a lot of air and the crystals. 5. Put back into freezer for 1-1/2 -2 hours. Then repeat step 5. You’ll keep repeating step for at least 8 hours. 24 hour is better. 6. When ready, it should be super smooth ice cream. Strawberry and orange are great!

Two ways to freeze ice cream without an ice cream freezer. Both are fun for kids or for parties/reunions, etc. I’ve done them both with various ice cream recipes with success.
1. Roll the can method. Large and small cans/containers with lids that will nest together. Put the ice cream mixture in the small can and seal it well. Put it into the large can and pack the space with ice and salt and seal it. Roll the can back and forth until the ice is melted. Carefully rinse the smaller can with cold water (you don’t want salt in your ice cream) and check. If not frozen enough, repeat the process. It depends a lot on the amount of ice you were able to pack in the space.
2. Zipper bag method. Similar to the can method, but use small and large zipper bags (freezer style works best) and play catch. Freezes faster, but makes a smaller amount, just right for the two who are playing catch with the bag!

I was making this ice cream 30 years ago. My favorite was orange pop with sweetened condensed milk and crushed pineapple, but all flavors of pop are good. Time to make it again.

Just made this with Diet Dr. Pepper left over from a party. I also used half a cup of heavy cream and half a cup of whole milk instead of just whole milk (all the fat from the cream is okay cause I used diet soda right? LOL) and of course the sweetened condensed milk. I accidentally overfilled my ice cream maker because it’s only the 1 and a half quart machine by Cuisinart. So I ended up without about a cup of the mixture left. I stuck it in the fridge and sorta don’t know what to do with it…
BUT the ice cream turned out fabulous!!! Great recipe. It’s a little different in texture from the normal ice cream you make, it’s a bit more icy/slushy. I ate some right away in a cup with a spoon (like a milkshake) and put the rest in the freezer to harden. I can’t wait to try it with other sodas, I think cream soda would be awesome.

Love to know that it worked with diet and I bet the Dr. Pepper was delicious!!!
