Pea Salad with cheese

Pea Salad is a classic and easy side dish.  A delicious salad of crunchy peas, crispy bacon, cheddar cheese, and red onion, all covered in a creamy dressing.

Pea Salad with cheese

Pea Salad is perfect for summer BBQ’s and potlucks. This salad comes together in a matter of minutes.  The hardest part of this salad is not eating all the bacon you fry up before you get it into the salad. It is full of pretty color and has lots of great texture too.

How to Make Pea Salad

  • Thaw Peas in the fridge the night before. Do not cook.
  • Cook bacon until crispy using your preferred baking method.
  • Crumble bacon.
  • Dice red onion.
  • Shred or cube cheese.
  • Combine peas, onion, bacon, and cheese in a bowl.
  • Combine mayonnaise, mustard, sugar, salt and pepper in a separate bowl and stir to combine.
  • Add dressing to salad and stir to coat.
  • Combine all the ingredients into a bowl and stir to coat.
  • Refrigerate until ready to serve.

Tips

  1. I like to use the petite peas you can find in the freezer section.  Just thaw the peas first, no need to cook them.
  2. I used red onion but a yellow or white onion would work too.
  3. Cheddar Cheese is my favorite but feel free to use your favorite, maybe a Pepper Jack or Monterey Jack. I like to cube the cheese but you can also add shredded cheese
  4. This salad is served cold so keep it refrigerated until ready to serve.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can you make pea salad ahead of time?

In the refrigerator the salad will last 2-3 days.  I keep it covered with plastic wrap or foil when it is in the refrigerator.

Is pea salad gluten free?

This salad can be made gluten free. Just insure there are not gluten additives in the items you use like bacon and mustard.
