Chocolate Malt Cookies are all of the chocolate goodness imaginable, complimented perfectly with malted milk powder and sea salt.
Why You’ll Love This Recipe!
It’s been a bit chilly around the Northwest lately. But any time the cold weather comes it totally puts me in a chocolate chip cookie mood. Actually warm weather puts in the chocolate chip cookie mood too – any weather can do it!
I love changing up my favorite chocolate chip cookie recipe a bit – adding different mix ins etc. Today’s recipe is packed with lots of amazing flavors! Chocolate Malt Cookies have three kinds of chocolate, as well as malt and a little sea salt to top it off. The malt gives these cookies an amazing depth of flavor. I love watching people try to guess what I’ve added to the cookie to give it such good flavor.
What is Malt?
Malt is a type of cereal grain, such as barley, that has undergone a drying process known as malting. It was originally considered a “health tonic” and was used as a supplement for babies. In 1922 it was added into milkshakes because adults were discovering they liked the taste too. Malt isn’t just for milkshakes anymore and can enhance the flavor of cookies, cakes and other baked goods and it puts these Chocolate Malt Cookies over the top!
What Does Malted Milk Powder Taste Like?
The malt adds another dimension to the cookie that I really love. I am a big fan of malt but even if you aren’t you will love these cookies as there is not a strong malt flavor but just an added level of flavor that is wonderful! In addition to adding delicious flavor, malt also has “health benefits” too!
Ingredients Needed
- Chocolate Chips. I am a big fan of milk chocolate chips and white chocolate chips in my cookies but combine that with semi sweet chocolate like in these cookies and you’ve got all your bases covered.
- Salt. A light sprinkling of coarse Kosher or sea salt or a coarse on top just gives it that extra little flavor surprise in your mouth!
- Flour. This recipe uses a combination of all purpose flour and cake flour. I have made them just with all purpose flour and they are delicious but the combination of flours makes a slightly more tender cookie.
- Baking soda
- Baking powder
- Butter, room temperature. I use salted butter. If using unsalted butter, add in a pinch more salt.
- Sugar. You will use a combination of brown sugar and granulated sugar.
- Malted Milk Powder. You will find this on the same aisle as the hot chocolate and powdered chocolate drink mixes.
- Eggs
- Vanilla extract
How to Make Chocolate Malt Cookies
- Cream butter and sugar until very light, about five minutes in the bowl of a stand mixer.
- Add eggs, one a time, mixing well after each.
- Add in vanilla.
- With mixer on low, add in dry ingredients, including malt powder. Mix just until dry ingredients are incorporated.
- Pour in all three kinds of chocolate chips.
- Refrigerate dough two hours (I put it in the freezer for 30 minutes)
- Bake at 350 degrees F oven on parchment lined cookie sheets.
- Sprinkle lightly with sea salt before baking.
- Bake 12-15 minutes
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I store leftover chocolate malt cookies?
They will keep in an airtight container at room temperature for 3-4 days. If you need to keep them longer, put them in the freezer using the information in this post.
If you want to make the cookie dough ahead and freeze it to bake the cookies later, follow the directions in this post.
What is the difference between malted milk powder and malt powder.
Malt powder is a powder made from grains that can be used to add flavor (non-diastatic malt powder) or convert starch into sugar in breads and pastries, which creates a smoother, higher rise with less yeast (diastatic malt powder). Malted milk powder is malt powder that has had milk solids added to it. We are using malted milk powder in these cookies.

- I have made these chocolate malt cookies without chilling them when I was in a real hurry. They have a tendency to spread just a little bit more but they are just as delicious!
- Use a cookie scoop to get evenly sized cookies. This one is my favorite cookie scoop.
