Why You’ll Love This Recipe

If you love cozy fall drinks, this apple cider hot chocolate is the best of both worlds. It combines the rich, creamy comfort of classic white hot chocolate with the warm, spiced flavor of apple cider for a drink that feels extra special and perfect for the season.

The combination of smooth white chocolate and sweet apple cider creates a unique flavor that’s both nostalgic and a little unexpected—in the very best way.

Ingredients Needed

  • Spiced Apple Cider. You can use store bought or homemade. If using store bought, I prefer Trader Joe’s Spiced Apple Cider.
  • Pure Vanilla Extract
  • Heavy Whipping Cream
  • White Chocolate. Use a good quality white chocolate bar, not white chocolate chips.

How to Make Apple Cider Hot Chocolate

  • Heat spiced apple cider in a pan over medium high heat.
  • Add in cream and vanilla extract and continue stirring until warmed through. Do not allow the mixture to come to a boil. This may cause the cream to burn.
  • Cut white chocolate bar into small pieces.
  • Remove the mixture from heat and add white chocolate pieces.
  • Stir mixture until white chocolate has completely melted.
  • Pour into mugs and top with whipped cream and a sprinkle of cinnamon.

Tips from Leigh Anne

  • Use good quality apple cider. Since apple cider is the base of this drink, choose a flavorful, fresh cider for the best results. Local orchard cider or refrigerated apple cider will give you the richest, most authentic taste.
  • Warm gently, don’t boil. Heat the cider and chocolate over medium-low heat. Boiling can affect the flavor and texture, so slow warming helps keep the drink smooth and creamy.
  • Use a good quality chocolate. I prefer using a white chocolate baking bar over chips for a richer flavor.
  • Add warm spices for extra flavor. A pinch of cinnamon, nutmeg, or apple pie spice enhances the cozy fall flavor and pairs beautifully with both the cider and chocolate.
  • Serve with whipped cream, mini marshmallows, or a drizzle of caramel. A sprinkle of cinnamon on top makes it feel extra festive and perfect for fall gatherings.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will apple juice work instead of apple cider?

You can, but apple cider will give you a deeper, richer flavor. Apple juice is sweeter and lighter, so consider adding a pinch of cinnamon or apple pie spice to boost the flavor.

Can I make this dairy free?

Yes! Use your favorite dairy-free milk such as almond, oat, or coconut milk, and choose dairy-free chocolate chips. It will still be creamy and delicious.

Can I make apple cider hot chocolate ahead of time?

This drink is best served fresh, but you can make it ahead and gently reheat on the stove. Stir well before serving to keep the texture smooth and creamy.

What toppings go well with it?

Whipped cream, marshmallows, caramel drizzle, or a sprinkle of cinnamon all make delicious toppings. For a fun fall touch, add a cinnamon stick or thin apple slice for garnish.

When you’re craving something warm and comforting with a seasonal twist, apple cider hot chocolate is the perfect choice. The combination of smooth chocolate and sweet, spiced cider creates a drink that feels festive, cozy, and just a little bit special. Whether you’re serving it at a fall gathering or enjoying a quiet moment at home, this delicious mug of comfort is sure to become a new cold-weather favorite.

Hey, just want to make sure, but do we add in the rest of the ingredients while the cider is heated, or after the cider is heated? Thanks, and excited to try recipe!

You heat the cider first and then add in the white chocolate and the liquid whipping cream. Stir until chocolate melts. Then pour into the glass and top with whipped cream and cinnamon.

This sounds delicious. I am definitely a hot chocolate kind if gal. I drink it all year long. But I love it when the apple cider hits the stores. I will have to try your recipe. Pinned and following you on Pinterest. 🙂
