CObb Salad Dressing in a jar

Tradition says this recipe is the original cobb salad dressing that was served on the original Cobb Salad from the Brown Derby Restaurant in Hollywood!

CObb Salad Dressing in a jar

Cobb Salad is a classic American salad that is said to have originated back in 1937 at the Brown Derby Restaurant in Hollywood. Today’s recipe is rumored to be a copycat version of that original Brown Derby dressing recipe.  Since I wasn’t around in 1937 to taste test it I’ll have to take the internet’s word for it.

This dressing is the perfect thing to add to my Classic Cobb Salad.

Cobb Salad Dressing with a spoon

Ingredients Needed

  • Red wine vinegar
  • Sugar
  • Lemon juice. Use fresh squeezed for best flavor
  • Salt and pepper
  • Worcestershire sauce
  • Dry mustard
  • Garlic
  • Olive oil
  • Salad oil. Use a mild flavored oil such as vegetable, canola or avocado oil

How to Make Original Cobb Salad Dressing

  • Combine all your ingredients including water, red wine vinegar, sugar, lemon juice, salt, pepper, Worcestershire sauce, dry mustard, garlic, olive oil and salad oil in a blender.
  • Blend together.
  • Chill for a while to allow the flavors to come together.

Tips from Leigh Anne

I find that homemade dressing gets better after it sits in the fridge for a while. Be sure to store leftover dressing in the refrigerator in an airtight container.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long will homemade dressing last in the refrigerator?

Vinaigrette will last up to two weeks.

Dairy based dressing such as Ranch or Buttermilk will last a week.  Dressings made with fresh ingredients such as onion or fresh herbs will also keep up to a week.

Can I use another kind of dressing on Cobb Salad?

Of course you can always dress your Cobb Salad with your favorite dressing whether that be French dressing, Ranch or a myriad of others!  You can always just grab what dressing is in your refrigerator to top your Cobb Salad with but when you want to be authentic – give this Brown Derby Cobb Salad Dressing a try. Making homemade dressing is so easy I’m not sure why anyone ever buys store bought dressing.  It takes a few minutes and you have a healthier, more delicious dressing!

Cut the salt to a pinch! This recipe was way too salt, for our taste. I added extra everything else to balance it out.

This is delicious!!! I confess I thought it might be underwhelming with no ‘spices’ paprika, turmeric, thyme or what have you. 🙂 It was amazing!!!! My teen daughter and I are both very ‘flavorful’ not bland cooks (we enjoy a lot of ethnic and international food) and we both were quite amazed at how yummy this was – and the ingredients are sooooo easy!!!! I did use white not red wine vinegar (out of red) and probably added closer to a tsp of sugar and more pepper and more lemon. I used pink salt and I used a mix of avocado, sunflower and olive oil. I also used fresh garlic. Thank you for such a great recipe. I look forward to exploring your site. 🙂
