Why You’ll Love This Recipe

Given a choice of desserts, if there is ice cream on the list, that is usually my choice. I come from a family of ice cream lovers. In fact, growing up, we had a freezer in the garage just for ice cream. Our family motto is, “There is always room for ice cream, it melts and fills in the cracks.”  Making homemade ice cream is a favorite childhood memory and one I have continued with my children.

I get on flavor kicks.  A few weeks ago it was Malted Milk Ice Cream, and during the holidays it is usually Peppermint .  I use my basic vanilla ice cream recipe and just change up the flavors by what I add in.  For Malted Milk Ice Cream it was malt powder and some crushed malted milk balls.  For Peppermint,  it was some peppermint syrup and crushed up candy canes.

My newest favorite flavor is cinnamon.  Cinnamon ice cream just by it self is wonderful but I decided to take it up a notch or two on the flavor ladder and I added in some homemade oatmeal cookies!  And you have Oatmeal Cookie Ice Cream!!!

How to Make Oatmeal Cookie Ice Cream

  • Mix together sugar, whole milk, half and half, whipping cream, cinnamon, vanilla and salt together.
  • Process in ice cream maker according to manufacturer’s directions.
  • Add in broken up oatmeal cookies during the last 5 minutes of mixing. I used homemade oatmeal cookies, but you could also use store bought. Adding them at the end prevents them from getting soft and mushy.
  • Place finished ice cream in an airtight container and place in freezer to harden. Allow to freeze for a few hours up to over night before serving.

I sprinkled a couple of crushed cookie on the top before putting it in the freezer for good measure!  I loved this flavor combination with the cinnamon and the crunchy oatmeal cookie.  So good!

I have the exact same ice cream maker and love it. Since I got it at the end of the summer last year I did not get much use out of it. I did happen to make a coffee ice cream and it was delicious. Would you mind sharing your plain vanilla ice cream recipe. I would truly appreciate it.

We made fresh raspberry ice cream for a family reunion and it was a hit. People were scraping the bottom of the freezer can after it had been emptied to get the last remaining spoon full!
