Blue Moon Ice Cream is a childhood favorite for me! The fruity flavor and fun color is always a hit big and little kids.
What is Blue Moon Ice Cream?
I grew up in Wisconsin and this ice cream is typically only found in Wisconsin and the upper midwest states. The story of where the ice cream came from is a little mysterious. It is also often called Smurf Ice Cream for obvious reasons! It is a true midwest original!
What Does Blue Moon Ice Cream Taste Like?
It has a fruity flavor and has been described as tasting like the leftover milk after eating a bowl of Fruit Loops or Fruity Pebbles. It has also been described as having the flavor of cotton candy, bubble gum or a mysterious flavor! Itmay sound odd, but it is delicious!
Smurf Ice Cream Ingredients
- Extracts. Lemon, vanilla and raspberry. Raspberry extract can be a bit of a challenge to find. I never could find it at any of my local grocery stores so I ordered it on Amazon. You can also use pureed raspberries in place of the extract which I did for one batch. It was yummy but I definitely liked it better with the raspberry extract.
- Food coloring. The blue color comes from blue food coloring. Next time I’ll add a little more blue food coloring to get a darker blue.
- Vanilla Pudding Mix. I used instant pudding.
- Milk. Use a combination of heavy whipping cream and whole milk.
- Sugar. Granulated sugar or fine granulated sugar.
How to Make Blue Moon Ice Cream
- Scald 1 cup milk in a pan (heat it just until it begins to boil)
- Add in sugar and salt and stir.
- Pour in whipping cream, vanilla, pudding, raspberry flavoring and lemon extract.
- Add blue gel food coloring to desired color.
- Chill mixture in fridge until cold.
- Churn in ice cream maker following manufacturer’s directions.
The flavor did not disappoint my childhood memories. It is yummy and everyone that I shared it with loved it!
How to Make chocolate Dipped Waffle Cones
To make the fun red, white and blue waffle cones I used here is a quick tutorial.
- Melt chocolate in the microwave or on the stove top.
- Dip top of cone into melted chocolate.
- Add sprinkles.
- Allow chocolate to set up.
- Add ice cream
Frequently Asked Questions
What is your favorite ice cream maker?
Table Top Ice Cream Maker. I use a table top electric ice cream maker. This one from Cuisinart is a great one to start with.
Ice Cream Compressor. Because we take our ice cream making pretty seriously around here I recently upgraded to this ice cream compressor from William Sonoma. It’s amazing and the texture of the ice cream is incredible.
What is the best way to store ice cream in the freezer?
You will also want an insulated ice cream container to put your ice cream in after it has processed. This helps keep your ice cream at a great scooping consistency and prevents freezer burn.
How long will ice cream last in the freezer?
Homemade ice cream will last 1-2 weeks. If you are not using an insulated ice cream container, ice crystals may form sooner.

You have NO idea how excited I am to try this!
Born & Raised in Sheboygan WI, our special trip would be to see the Big Cow in Manitowoc at the Cedar Crest ice cream shop! That’s where you can get the best Blue Moon ice cream, or even better “Playdough” icecream which is blue moon with fun pieces of colored cookie dough (no chocolate just dough) in it!!! Amazing!
It’s not fair being from WI but being military we move everywhere else, and missing all of our fabulous products like Cheese, Ice Cream, Brats, & Beer! 😉 Like seriously craving some squeaky cheese curds! We can get a few things abroad, but the good rare items are the hard ones to get anywhere else but Wisconsin, like Blue Moon! 😀
Great job & thank you!!!!
