I hope all of you that celebrated Thanksgiving enjoyed a wonderful holiday with friends and family and got to eat lots of good food! I sure did. Anytime I am under the same roof as all my kids and husband life is good!!
I know many of you are out there battling the crowds of Black Friday or maybe you’re still in your jammies doing your shopping on the computer. Well, we’ve got a Black Friday special for you here on the blog.
If you have read my blog for any period of time you know that I am a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. One of the practices of our religion is to be prepared. In fact our church has an amazing website with all kinds of valuable information on how to be prepared in many aspects of our life. One of these areas is food storage.
We are encouraged to store 3 months of food in our home so that in case of an emergency – things like earthquakes, floods, tornadoes, tsunamis etc. we would be able to take care of ourselves and help others. I have always tried to follow this counsel and my garage is full of cans of dehydrated food. Food I hope I never have to eat.
When it comes to food storage it is a good idea to store what you eat. Well, I don’t usually eat dehydrated food. So I have always struggled a bit with the whole food storage thing. We don’t even eat a lot of food out of boxes or cans and the only real options available for food storage have been just that canned or dehydrated food.
I was recently introduced to a company called Thrive Life (formally Shelf Reliance) that carries a line of freeze dried food that is perfect for food storage. Thrive Life sells high quality food storage (no additives, preservatives, non-GMO, no dyes etc), food rotation systems and e-prep supplies.
Freeze dried foods are picked when fully ripe and flash frozen to retain all their nutrients. For more information on the difference between freeze dried or dehydrated go here.
I was sent a box of dehydrated food that contained all the ingredients needed to make chicken noodle soup.
There was a can of chicken, as well as bags of freeze dried carrots, celery and onion.
All the seasonings you are need are available as well as the ingredients to make your own noodles! (I cheated and use some egg noodles I had in the pantry)
Without telling my husband I made the soup for dinner one night. Can I just tell you he had no idea he was eating food storage!
The most amazing thing was the chicken! Once hydrated the freeze dried chicken tastes and looks just like you had just cut up a fresh chicken breast. It is real chicken.
This is real food. Food I can eat!
One of the important things with food storage is you need to rotate your food. That means you actually need to eat what you store. I have never eaten any of the dehydrated food that is in my garage but I can, would and did eat the freeze dried food from Thrive.
Misty, a Thrive rep, also sent me a bag of their freeze dried grapes and pineapple too. Oh my gosh!! It was like eating candy. The freeze dried grapes were amazing!!!
I didn’t even bother to hydrate them they were so good just like they come out of the bag.
