Veggie Grill}Portland

Recently I was invited to the grand opening of a new restaurant here in Portland – Veggie Grill.  It is a new franchise to Portland and has come up from California.

The Veggie Grill is a vegan restaurant.  Now if you are like me your first thought may be – no thanks!  I am not a vegan and I am not a vegetarian.  So I have to admit I was a little leary before my first visit to the Veggie Grill and so was my husband.

We were pleasantly surprised!  The food was delicious, fresh and the presentation was lovely.

I tried their Baja Fiesta salad which was a combination of romaine, papaya, avocado, roasted corn, quinoa, cucumber, cilantro and a light, fresh ginger papaya vinaigrette.  It was delicious.

Jim was a bit braver and tried the Santa Fe Crispy Chicken.  Remember this is a vegan restaurant so it wasn’t real chicken but it looked like chicken and it tasted like chicken and the texture was great.  The sandwich came with sweet potato fries which were amazing!

There is no soda is this health conscious restaurant instead they have a flavorful selection of teas and lemonade.

We opted for the strawberry lemonade.

We had fun visiting with those at the neighboring tables and checking out what they had ordered.

They shared their chicken buffalo wings with us (again,  not real chicken) and they were great – just the right amount of heat and you would never know they weren’t real chicken.  The chicken is made with wheat so it is not gluten free.

The lady next to me had the All Hale Kale salad and although it looked like a little too much kale for my taste she was raving about it!

I was curious about the nachos since I had tried various vegan cheeses trying to find one for Cali and her dairy allergy but could never find one that melted good and tasted good.  I was pleasantly surprised with the cheese they used on the nachos – the texture was great and the flavor was good.

They also brought us out a sampler plate of desserts.  I have to admit I wasn’t crazy about their vegan chocolate chip cookie or the chocolate pudding but the vegan carrot cake was excellent.

Overall we had a great time, the service was excellent and the food a very pleasant surprise!  I can’t wait for Cali to come home for a visit so I can take her.  Even if you aren’t vegetarian or vegan but are a fan of fresh, delicious food you’ll want to give Veggie Grill a try.

Their first location is located at Cedar Hills Crossing at 3435 SW Cedar Hills Blvd.  They will also be opening one in downtown Portland.
