My Own Field of Poppies

by Leigh Anne on May 31, 2009

Do you remember that scene in the Wizard of Oz where Dorothy is running through a beautiful field of poppies with the Tin Man, Cowardly Lion and the Scarecrow?

I always loved that scene, mainly because of the flowers.  Even though the poppies have had a spell put on them by the Wicked Witch so that Dorothy falls asleep, they are still beautiful!  Glenda saves the day with a little snowfall!

I love this time of the year in my garden because I have my own field of poppies!

My favorite spring blooming flower! Princess Victoria Louise (Papaver orientale)

Fortunately my field of poppies is not poisonous!  Mine are just beautiful!

Mine even have a few purple Japanese Iris mixed in.

Elsewhere in the garden the peonies and roses are beginning to pop!

And the snowball bush is just finishing up.

Ohhhh, this is just the beginning of so many beautiful things to come!

What’s blooming in your garden right now?

Just moved to a new home this Spring and there are peonies, roses and day lillies blooming in various places throughout my new yard. Love it! Your flowers are beautiful!

My mom has those “snowballs” in the back yard at our cabin. They are some of my favorites. I love to get them when they are green still.

My brother Lane is Logan’s roommate and he showed me your website. We tried out a few of your recipes while he was at my house in Colorado visiting this past week. I LOVE your food and your thoughts. Thank you for sharing. I look forward to making many more of the wonderful recipes!!

Beautiful! I love the color of your poppies, and I love the smaller look of the japanese iris. I’m taking note. My hydrangea is showing the buds of the bloom, but no color yet. Columbine bloomed, hot pink hanging geranium, and darling purple chive blooms are in. Fun!

I get so excited about the new blossoms –that daily my little boys and I walk around the yard to see the newest ones. Now my boys get just as excited as me! It is fun.

I need to send you a picture of the fields here in Italy with all the red poppies! My husband and i live in Italy thanks to the USAF and we live in an area that has lots of farmland and such. Our drive to the base has a field that is a few acres of nothing but red poppies! It is beautiful!! I will take a picture this week to share!

Leigh Anne, Thank you for sharing! Your flowers are gorgeous. Makes me want to get in the garden today, but my day will be spent making/canning jam.

Gorgeous! I miss the northwest so much. I think I say that every time you post garden pictures, lol. Right now my clematis is the star of the yard; it’s so eye catching and it makes me smile every time I drive up to the house.

WoW!!! Lets just say I am jealous of your beautiful garden!! Not only do you have the most gorgeous flower beds, but you have herbs too!! You are amazing. I wish that when you came to Utah to see your kids you could stop buy and give me a consult!! (In my dreams) Thanks for being so talented in so many ways and sharing it with all of us.

I love poppies. I admired them as a little girl when wandering through my mother’s gardens. I would love to have pink poppies. Where did you get them? I only have seen orange/red.

21 Jody Walunas June 1, 2009 at 1:45 pm

I am so in love with the pink poppies! I have the bright orange and didn’t know the pink existed. If I send you a self stamped envelope would you gather me up some seeds? Let me know, Jody Walunas in Wilsonville, Or
