Wild Orange Honey Butter

This post is honor of all my Utah friends who celebrated Pioneer Day this past weekend. We had a celebration here in Oregon too on Saturday.

For those of you who may never have heard of Pioneer Day, it is July 24th. It marks the day that Brigham Young and the pioneers who went West with him entered the Salt Lake Valley. I have no pioneer ancestry but my husband does so we are always grateful for July 24th and the opportunity it gives us to stop, ponder and remember how grateful we are for the sacrifices they made.

I am not sure why, but whenever I think about the pioneers I think about honey butter. I associate honey butter with Utah and with pioneers.

This recipe actually came from my mother in law who makes a mean honey butter. It doesn’t get much better than homemade bread with honey butter. Actually, any bread with honey butter is pretty amazing.

Wild Orange Honey Butter

My mother in law has a secret ingredient in her honey butter. Generally, honey butter is just a combination of honey and butter but my mother in law adds in a little vanilla extract which makes it rather amazing.

I have been on a little bit of an orange kick lately. Remember those amazing orange rolls – if you haven’t checked them out, you will want to! So, instead of vanilla I decided to add in some wild orange essential oil (if you are interested in how to purchase some send me an email and I’ll send you the info).

Wild Orange Honey Butter

Can I just say WOW! The addition of the orange was amazing. The thing I loved about it the most is that people didn’t expect it. I had several meetings at my house last week and I served fresh rolls and orange honey butter at them and people went crazy over the orange honey butter.

Whether it is homemade rolls or store bought bread, Wild Orange Honey Butter would be an amazing addition.

All you honey butter makers out there – have you ever added in any additional flavors? Thinking raspberry may be a winner too!

Wild Orange Honey Butter

Honey Butter}Wild Orange
  • 1 C butter
  • 1½ C honey
  • 1 tsp vanilla or 2-3 drops of Wild Orange Essential Oil
  1. Beat together for at least ten minutes
  2. It will be runny at first but as it mixes together it will thicken up and get light and fluffy

    Hi Leigh Ann, Love your site & have tried many recipes & made MANY of your posted crafts. Recently I made your Lemon Angel Pie & everyone LOVED it—no leftovers with just 4 of us!! One slight problem was the temp to bake the meringue. The recipe said 350 degrees, but when smoke started billowing out of the oven, I realized there was a mistake. I was able to remove the black/burned sections & continued baking, but at 250 degrees. (My husband looked up the temp to cook meringue on google–lucky me.) Thought you might want to check out your recipe & correct it for future bakers.

      It doesn’t last long in my fridge because we eat it all. The essential oil has no shelf life so it will keep as long as the butter and honey will which I have to imagine is pretty long!

    Hi! I found your blog after a google search on ice cream sandwiches for parties, and I just have to say, it’s GORGEOUS! Your food, and styling, are just amazing.     Hi there! Found this 30 minute yeast roll receipe on pinterest and decided to try it. I had a little trouble though. Im pretty sure I followed all the directions but my dough was really sticky! I couldn’t make nice little balls like in your pictures. Mine were more like little plops of sticky dough. The consistency was wierd too. They were thick. Any advice on what I may have done wrong?

      Just sounds like you needed to add a bit more flour. Your weather, humidity, altitude will all effect your dough. Just add flour until you can handle the dough easily.

    I just wanted to know if this essential oil is the same kind of oil that I buy in Whole Foods? Ibought lavender essential oil. Is this the same thing?

      I purchased my oils through doTerra and they are for internal use also- not all essential oils are so you need to check your bottle carefully.
