So I was checking out one of my favorite food blogs last week and found a recipe for Heath Bar Cake. I knew immediately that I had to give it a try. A cake covered in Heath Bar? How could I not??
I found the recipe over at my friend’s Melanie’s blog. She never steers me wrong!
So I made the cake and I think I ate almost the whole thing myself (I’m not kidding). I emailed Melanie to thank her.
So I decided if it was that good with Heath Bar it could be even better with my favorite candy bar – Milky Way.
I used 5 full size Milky Way bars and chopped them up into small pieces.
The cake is quick and easy to mix up. It is then covered with that chopped up candy bar of choice.
I have to say, I was right. It was amazing! So depending on your candy bar preference you may want to try it with Heath Bars which gives you a nice little crunch on top or Milky Way which gives you an amazing gooey, caramely top! Or you could just pick your favorite candy bar. I’m thinking Snickers or Reeses Peanut Butter Cups would be pretty amazing too.
Given my track record with this cake I knew I had to get the majority of it out of my house. I have no self control! So I cut the cake into individual serving pieces and boxed it up in a container and made a delivery to family at church who had just had a baby and another friend. (I did keep a couple of pieces)
So what kind of candy bar are you going to use???
Candy Bar Cake
1 C packed light brown sugar
1/2 C granulated sugar
2 C flour
8 tablespoons (1 stick) butter, softened
1 C buttermilk
1 large egg
1 tsp vanilla
1 tsp baking soda
1/2 tsp salt
5 full sized Milky Way bars, chopped
Preheat the oven to 350 degrees. Lightly grease a 9X13-inch pan and set aside.
In a large bowl, mix together the sugars, flour and butter. Crumble these ingredients together with a pastry blender, until the mixture is crumbly and coarse. Set aside 1/2 cup of the crumbs to a small bowl. In another bowl combine the remaining crumbs, the buttermilk, egg, vanilla, baking soda and salt. Mix well.
Pour the batter into the prepared pan, smoothing it to the edges. Sprinkle the top of the cake with the reserved crumbs and chopped Milky Way bars. Bake for 25-30 minutes until the center is no longer gooey but a toothpick inserted comes out with moist crumbs. The cake may fall slightly in the center leaving the edges raised. No worries. It still is amazing!

Leigh Anne – you are brilliant! I love that it worked with the Milky Way bars…I was wondering if you were going to try it after we “chatted” about it. Also, I love that little packaging idea…I’m definitely going to steal that and use it next time I take a meal into someone and want to make cake for dessert. It looks so much prettier than throwing slices onto a paper plate.
I love all your ideas and the presentation is always so nice!
This looks wonderful and Milky Ways are my FAVORITE!! I absolutely love love the packaging idea!!! Totally going to steal that idea and use it for a party I am throwing at church this weekend!!!
Oh Wow! This dessert looks so good. I can’t wait to give it a try. I’m going to go with Heath Bars. I have a slight obsession with them. : ) I too love your packaging idea. So pretty! Thanks Leigh Anne!
Oh my! I think Heath would be amazing but with Milky Ways it looks delish too. I’d eat the whole thing too. Thanks for the recipe! We’ll be making this soon!!!
Where did you find the adorable cupcake holders???
Marilee, They came from the Decorette Shop in Tigard.
Try your favorite choc chip cookie with cut up candy bars added when hot out of oven. Or a lemon sugar cookie with lemon heads right out of oven. You get the picture. Candy bar cookies! Our favorite.
Made this last night. It looks yummy. I made it in my brownie pan that makes squares. And I put them in heart cupcake holders. I can’t wait for my friends at Girls Grub and Gab to enjoy them. Thanks for the recipe.
I heard Glenn Beck talking about a Milky Way cake not too long ago. It sounds similar, but was made with just the candy barn, butter and a cake mix. Sounds so good!

I’m going to go half and half, Milky Way and Snickers! Game night at my house is next week. Guess what is going to show up for dessert? Yum!
