This recipe for hummus was one of the first recipes I shared here on the blog in the first couple years of blogging. This was back in the good old days when I had children at home. I remember, it was finals week at the high school which meant that there were half days of school all week and a kitchen table covered in books!
Healthy Hummus at Home
Tessa had a group of friends over to study so I figured I better make them a healthy snack, something that would help all those brain cells work a littler harder! , I found this recipe for hummus on the very first blog I ever visited, it was just someone’s personal family blog but it introduced me to the world of blogging. That blog inspired me to start my own.
What is Hummus?
It is a Middle Eastern dip made from cooked garbanzo beans and tahini which is sesame seed paste. It is also a healthy treat that is full of nutrients, protein, dietary fiber, and heart-healthy omega fatty acids. And it is also delicious. Homemade hummus is so easy and so much better than store bought version.
Hummus Ingredients
- Garbanzo Beans or Chickpeas. You can purchase these canned or you can by them dry and cook them at home.
- Tahini Sauce. This is ground sesame seeds and can be found in the peanut butter aisle of the grocery store.
- Lemon Juice. Fresh is always best!
- Olive Oil. This is what gives hummus it’s nice smooth texture. I often drizzle additional oil over the top of hummus before serving.
- Garlic. Always adds great flavor.
- Seasoning. Salt and I often will add a few dashes hot sauce for a little extra kick.
- Garbanzo juice. Be sure and reserve the juices you drain off to add in at the end if you want to make your hummus a little thinner.
How Do You Make Hummus?
- Use a blender or food processor.
- Add all ingredients including, garbanzo beans, tahini, garlic, lemon juice and some seasonings into the food processor and pulse it until your desired consistency.
- Save some of the liquid you drain from the garbanzo beans to add into the hummus if you want it thinner and smoother. I like mine with a little texture.
What to Serve With Hummus
- Vegetables. It is great with carrots, tomatoes, and cucumbers.
- Focaccia Bread
- Crackers
- Pretzels

Drizzle the top of the hummus with some olive oil, a sprinkle of paprika and some chopped parsley. This adds some nice color.

Most of the kneading is done in the Kitchen Aid but at the end I do knead it by hand a bit just to get it nice and smooth.

I have made your hummus several times – we love it! I would like to try the flatbread but have a question. How long did you knead yours for? Is it one of those breads that doesn’t need much kneading? Did you do it by hand or leave it in the machine? Thanks so much!

Jade, I use Tabasco sauce Happy New Year!

Hey, I realize this is probably a dumb question but what kind of hot sauce do you use?
